My first book comes out September 17th
My first book, That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea, is coming out on September 17th.
In a very personal (and I hope entertaining) memoir, I’ve tried to provide an insider’s view of what it’s like taking a crazy idea and then struggling to make it real. From having to pitch my own mother on being an early investor, to the motel conference room that served as our first office, to weathering the server crashes on launch day, to the now-infamous meeting when we pitched Blockbuster to acquire us, it’s the untold story of how a handful of people (with no prior experience in the video business) started with an idea that most people thought would never work and ended up building a company that changed the world.
It also looks back on my 40 years as an entrepreneur, and tries to answer some of the most fundamental questions about taking that leap of faith in business and in life: How do you begin? How do you weather disappointment and failure? How do you deal with success? What even is success?
The real-life, totally improbable story of Netflix’s early days, told in Marc Randolph’s unconventional, engaging, inspiring style. A vivid primer on the realities of startup ventures, and a seriously entertaining read.
